Wednesday 23rd October – walk ***** Suffolk Wildlife Trust – Bradfield Woods – sunny periods.

Nice quiet night in the Suffolk Wildlife Trust car park at Bradfield Wood nice and toasty in the van even if a little nippy outside. During breakfast, being half term, a few kids were being dropped off for a day in the woods which included baking your own potatoes in an open fire:) We had a nice day for our walk when we set off at 10.10, sunny periods and a light breeze. Walking boots and wellies were order of the day after all the rain we have had but the paths are really well maintained as this is a working Hazel Coppice wood. We set off on the longest red walk which skirts the edge of the woods and although there were a few cars in the car park we only saw one other person out with his butterfly net! This is a beautiful, peaceful place and as with Ickworth yesterday, it was full of mushrooms including an unusual purple one! There were several notices up warning of a deer cull and we passed several shooting platforms and even spotted deer hoof prints in the mud but we never usually see deer in the trees. The Autumn colours might have been a little disappointing, perhaps we need a good frost to turn the colours but we were treated to some good wildlife, grey squirrels whizzing around hiding nuts and loads of birds flitting about. We sat on a bench and were soon surrounded by Long Tailed Tits, Robins, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Black Caps. Walking on I had a brief glimpse of a Nut Hatch and then the highlight, a Tree Creeper running up a tree trunk. I had just changed to my big lens so got a few pics which were not too bad as it was a long way off and dark! We continue catching glimpses of Jays and Green Woodpeckers and then we look out over the surrounding farmland and spotted two deer laying out in the open but a long way off. We come across a small bird hide by a pond and go in and actually sit still for 20 minutes and soon we had a Wren and Blue Tits but then we got a real treat as a brilliant red Bull Finch came down to feed on the blackberries and had a real feast. I got some pics but he was a bit too far away for them to be really good and he was great to see! We came to the field borders that were set with wild flowers which looked stunning when we walked here in the summer but now are dead and the sunflower seeds had been all eaten. We saw Marsh Tits feeding here. We were getting peckish now as we left the red path and completed the walk on the blue path, we had been out over two hours covering three miles and were soon tucking into yummy soup.
We were just going to drive home but on passing through nearby Woolpit we got a phone call from windsurfing friend Andy Mexome asking what we were doing in Woolpit? As he is renovating three cottages behind the Crown Pub he saw us drive past! We returned to see him for a lovely chat and guided tour of his site:) Then on crossing the A14 we decided to make a small detour to Ixworth to visit our friends the Hurrells. While Neil was out on a boy’s day out on his bike, we had a lovely catch up with Linda who had been ill but is now well on the mend. We were just about to leave when Neil arrived home after a 26-mile bike ride but that did include a pub lunch:) So a great break from our decorating enjoying the best of Suffolk!
